Kareem Reid
"Nightlife is sometimes the only space where we're allowed, or we feel allowed, to define ourselves."
The first exhibition on Queer British Art, in Tate Britain, included a number of ‘queer stories’. In collaboration with Channel 4, Tate among other things presented a film portrait of Kareem Reid (UK) – artist, writer and founder of the club night Body Party – in which Reid shows how he navigates as a ‘queer black body’ in this world. A story about social isolation, incomprehension and the importance of the Body Party as both a temporal cushion and a foretaste of a different future.
